ENRICH
Project Summary
The ENRICH (Enhancing Resources and Increasing Capacities of Poor Households Towards Elimination of Their Poverty) Project was implemented by Shishu Niloy Foundation (SNF) from October 2014 to 30 June 2026 in Elangi Union of Kotchandpur Upazila, Jhenaidah District, with financial support from PKSF. The project was implemented by a dedicated team of 35 staff members, reaching 22,052 beneficiaries from 5,168 households.
ENRICH adopted a holistic and community-based development approach to improve the socio-economic condition of poor and vulnerable households. Through integrated interventions in health, education, nutrition, livelihoods, agriculture, social awareness, and capacity building, the project strengthened household resilience, promoted social inclusion, and contributed to sustainable poverty reduction.
Goal
To improve the quality of life of poor and vulnerable households by enhancing their assets, strengthening their capacities, and enabling sustainable poverty reduction through integrated community development.
Objectives
- Empower disadvantaged households through comprehensive and need-based support services.
- Enhance the human dignity, resilience, and self-reliance of vulnerable families.
- Improve access to health, education, nutrition, livelihoods, and social protection services.
- Promote sustainable income-generating opportunities and productive asset development.
- Build awareness to prevent social issues such as child marriage, drug addiction, gender-based violence, and eve-teasing.
- Strengthen community participation and local leadership for sustainable development.
Impact
The ENRICH Project significantly contributed to improving the living conditions of thousands of families in Elangi Union. Participating households experienced increased access to essential services, improved livelihood opportunities, greater social awareness, and stronger community engagement. Women and marginalized groups became more active in household and community decision-making, while awareness campaigns fostered positive social behavior and strengthened social cohesion. The integrated approach enhanced community resilience and laid a strong foundation for long-term, sustainable development.
Key Achievements
- Successfully served 22,052 beneficiaries from 5,168 households over nearly twelve years.
- Strengthened household capacities through integrated development interventions.
- Increased awareness on health, nutrition, sanitation, education, and environmental sustainability.
- Supported livelihood improvement through agriculture, entrepreneurship, and income-generating activities.
- Promoted women’s empowerment and greater participation in community development.
- Contributed to reducing harmful social practices, including child marriage, drug abuse, and eve-teasing, through continuous awareness and community mobilization.
- Established effective collaboration among communities, local institutions, and service providers to ensure sustainable outcomes.
Challenges
- Addressing deeply rooted social norms and traditional practices required continuous awareness-building and community engagement.
- Climate-related risks and natural disasters occasionally affected livelihoods and agricultural productivity.
- Economic shocks and inflation increased the vulnerability of low-income households.
- Ensuring long-term sustainability of project outcomes after completion required continued ownership by community institutions and local stakeholders.
Learning
The implementation of ENRICH demonstrated that sustainable poverty reduction requires an integrated, people-centered approach rather than isolated interventions. Strong community participation, local leadership, and multi-sectoral collaboration are essential for achieving lasting development outcomes. Investing in capacity building, women’s empowerment, and social awareness creates resilient communities capable of sustaining positive change beyond the project period. The experiences and lessons from ENRICH will continue to guide SNF in designing and implementing future community development initiatives.
