Health and Nutrition Support
Project Summary
Shishu Niloy Foundation (SNF), under the ENRICH Project supported by PKSF, is committed to improving the health and well-being of poor and marginalized communities in Jhenaidah district. Through a comprehensive health program, SNF provides free healthcare services through Static Clinics, Satellite Clinics, Health Camps, and Special Eye Camps across three unions of three upazilas.
One of the most impactful components of the program is eye care support for disadvantaged people suffering from vision-related problems, particularly cataracts. Through regular screening and identification processes, patients requiring cataract surgery and other specialized eye treatments are referred to BNSB Hospital in the Shiromani area of Khulna. This initiative helps restore sight and improve the quality of life of vulnerable individuals who otherwise lack access to specialized healthcare services.
Project Goal and Objectives
Goal
To improve the health, vision, and overall quality of life of poor and marginalized populations by ensuring access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
Objectives
- Provide free and accessible healthcare services to underserved communities.
- Identify and support patients suffering from cataracts and other eye diseases.
- Facilitate quality cataract surgeries and follow-up care for vulnerable individuals.
- Reduce preventable blindness and visual impairment among poor communities.
- Enhance awareness regarding eye health and preventive healthcare practices.
Impact
The eye care initiative has significantly improved the lives of beneficiaries by restoring vision and enabling them to regain independence in their daily activities. Many elderly and economically disadvantaged individuals who were unable to work, move independently, or participate in family and community life due to cataracts have experienced renewed confidence and productivity after surgery.
The program has also reduced the financial burden on poor households by providing free treatment and referral services. Improved vision has enhanced beneficiaries’ social inclusion, economic participation, and overall well-being.
Achievements
- Successfully identified and referred cataract patients from marginalized communities.
- Completed 122 cataract surgeries during the reporting period under the ENRICH Project.
- Achieved a cumulative total of 369 cataract surgeries since the initiation of the eye care intervention.
- Conducted regular health camps and eye screening activities across project areas.
- Increased community awareness regarding eye health and the importance of timely treatment.
Challenges
- Limited awareness among rural populations regarding eye diseases and available treatment options.
- Transportation and mobility difficulties for elderly patients traveling to specialized hospitals.
- Financial constraints faced by vulnerable households despite free treatment services.
- Growing demand for eye care services exceeding available resources and healthcare facilities.
- Need for continuous follow-up and post-operative support for beneficiaries.
Learning
The project has demonstrated that community-based health screening and referral systems are highly effective in identifying individuals suffering from preventable blindness. Strong collaboration between local communities, healthcare providers, and development partners can significantly improve access to specialized healthcare services for marginalized populations.
The experience also highlights the importance of regular awareness campaigns, early detection, and timely intervention in reducing visual impairment. Integrating eye care services into broader community health programs ensures greater outreach, sustainability, and long-term impact on the lives of vulnerable people.
